Whaea Lena takes Kapa Haka and Poly Club. Both groups welcome all students who are interested. Our Poly Club practices on Friday mornings and performs each year in the Intermediate Poly Fest.
Kapa Haka perform each year at the Newlands Kapa Haka Festival and the St Brigids Kapa Haka Festival. Last year they were also invited to perform at Government House. They practice every Friday morning.
Whaea Lena also directs the production (with help from Mrs H for music and Ms J-V for dance), which happens every second year.
Mrs Hwang (Mrs H) takes the Orchestra and choir. In the past Orchestra has been to hear the NZSO play, and has been to the Intermediate Orchestra Exchange. Any students who are interested and play an instrument are able to join the Orchestra.
Ms Jessen-Vaughan (Ms J-V) takes CentreStage our auditioned dance performance group and directs Stage Challenge. She also coaches the Aerobics Team. The Aerobics team trains in terms 1 and 2 for the NZ Regional Competition in term 3, they also compete in the Inter-intermediate Competition.
Stage Challenge happens every two years (opposite year to production) and involves over a third of the school in planning, performance and production. With about 90 dancers onstage, all students interested are encouraged to audition.
CentreStage is our elite dance group. Dancers audition for a place at the beginning of the year in production years and in term 3 in stage challenge years. In the past students have been on a backstage tour of the Royal New Zealand Ballet studios, competed in Hip Hop competitions and been to see the RNZB perform.
There's also heaps of opportunities to help out behind the scenes with the performing arts too - hair, make up and set design for production and stage challenge. Sound and lighting for celebration evenings and props and backstage too.
